During one of these “rock em’ sock em’” bouts my father punched a hole in the bathroom door. But they often argued and things sometimes boiled over into fist fights and damaged property. Day-to-day and weekend routines were normal like everyone hopping into the Ford Falcon to go shopping at the co-op. Through all of this, a few experiences growing up before I moved out and went to college surfaced and remain vivid. Occasionally images would pop up during rides on the subway as I observed all the other passengers glued to their devices. This mostly happened during moments of solitude, free from the cacophony of the city, or a needy Android beeping for my attention. Long after my mother and father had passed away I periodically reflected on whether they were good parents or not. Who needs electronic devices to be elsewhere when that elsewhere is right here? Two specific areas have been preoccuping me: my parents, and food.ĭid they love each other? Did they love me? I stopped listening to podcasts and playlists a few years ago. This usually happens while I’m walking or in transit, but also sitting in a cafe with a cup of coffee.
